The Moral Test
Democratic Vice President Hubert Humphrey spoke at a building dedication in 1977. He said, “the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped. Thomas Jefferson spoke of the society as a whole when he said, “the measure of society is how it treats the weakest members”.
Many in our government and society support government programs to help children, the elderly and the poor but at the same time oppose the basic right to life of each person by supporting abortion, euthanasia and in some cases infanticide. The right to life is the most basic and essential right that each person possesses. What good are all our other rights if our right to life is not secure? How will our society be judged if we continue to allow the killing of our most defenseless?
