THE STRUGGLE

There is a famous saying that states “ all that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good women and men to do  nothing”. How true it is and how unfair it seems. Those of us who stand for the right to life for each person generally focus on our families and communities. Because of our belief in the importance of each person, we support charities and work for a better world for all. Those who support abortion, mercy killing, euthanasia and other acts that deny the sanctity of life never seem to rest. They are relentless. Their ideology demands that they focus on changing the society and everyone in it to agree with their views on the relative unimportance of each individual person. They can accept no disagreement from their position.

Is the unborn child a person? All the biological evidence that we have, says that she is. Can our society accept the fact that her mother may kill her usually for reasons of convenience, confusion or pressure from others. Wouldn’t it be better, more human and humane, to support that pregnant mother through her pregnancy and after delivery? Women’s support groups like Life’s Connection do exactly that.

Would it be better to support and care for our elderly, seriously ill and troubled people or help them to kill themselves? The movement to legalize mercy killing and euthanasia is growing and never rests. In some countries, voluntary euthanasia has become non-voluntary. It clearly shows the difference between the two conflicting world views. Our belief is that each person is worthwhile and important. Even in times of difficulty, human life is valuable and people are worthy of our support. We humans did not give life and we have no right to take innocent life. The opposing ideology views all things, including human life as relative. If a pregnant woman views her pregnancy negatively, the quick way of dealing with it is to kill the child. If an anorexic woman is suffering from her condition, the quick way to deal with it is to help her kill herself.

The two opposing viewpoints reflect their central beliefs – one believes that each person is intrinsically valuable – the other believes that no one and nothing is intrinsically valuable. One believes in support, counseling and teaching – the other believes in the quick, easy and profitable fix. Whichever of these two viewpoints comes to dominate in our society will determine what kind of world our kids and grandkids will have to live in.

We cannot rest because the people on the other side do not rest. We must become involved because they are already involved. Studies show that less than half the voters who would likely support pro-life and other conservative causes actually vote. Many are not even registered to vote. We cannot afford to stand and watch. We must vote and support pro-life candidates. We must get involved even if it’s uncomfortable. We owe it to ourselves, our kids and grandkids and to each other. The time for action is now.
