THE NATURAL RESULT
As we look at our society and the world in general, we see way more violence than we would like. From wars that seem resistant to settlement to drive-by shootings on our streets, man’s inhumanity to man is much too prevalent. Why have we come to this? I believe that what is happening now is at least partially a natural result of a decision made by the Supreme Court in 1973. In the case of Roe vs. Wade, the Court, in effect, decided that it is acceptable to destroy an unborn person for the welfare or convenience of another person. In so doing, the Court invalidated selected people’s most basic right – the right to life. In this particular instance, the Court’s decision, in fact, set up a situation in which one group of people (mothers and their doctors) can decide whether another person (the unborn) will live or die. Once that precedent is set, on what logical foundation can we defend anyone’s right to life? If each person’s right to life is not defended by our constitution and by our religious beliefs, but rather based on decisions made by others, on what basis do we attempt to show ourselves and all others respect simply because we are human beings? If we accept the logic of that Supreme Court decision which, in effect, sets up a system that allows one group of people to decide whether other innocent people shall live or die, how can we expect anything other than disregard for others and violence in our society? All decisions have consequences and that Court decision helped us down a path toward a reality that none of us wanted. The Roe vs. Wade decision has been reversed but the damage done to our cultural values remains. Groups that profit from abortion and those who do not value the lives of people who do not measure up to their standards are strong and motivated. If anyone can be counted on to realize how important the basic right to life is in connection to the kind of world we live in, it will have to be us – prolifers. If there is to be a better world for us, our kids and grandkids, it will be up to us to make it so.
