A Christmas Reflection

We have recently celebrated the Christmas season during which the world seems to be a little brighter and people take the time to gather and give to others. From the gift giving between family members to the holiday meals for the needy provided by charities and churches, we seem to be a little more aware of the dignity of each other. Wouldn’t it be great if we as a society could keep that thought for a bit longer – maybe even all year long. For those of us who belong to a faith community and also for all who believe our country’s Bill of Rights, respect for each individual is a core belief. Each of us is valuable regardless of whether we have not yet been born or are a 92 year old who is bedridden. Each of us is valuable regardless of our gender or the color of our skin. Each of us is valuable regardless of our mental or physical abilities or handicaps. Each of is valuable simply because we are human beings. Those of us of religious faiths believe that God values each of us and sees us as His sons and daughters. If you as an American believe the Bill of Rights, you know that each of us has inalienable rights. That’s great news. It’s worth defending, spreading and living. Let’s all think about how we interact with each other. Let’s spread the word and live our lives showing that each person has the inherent dignity that demands respect. Let’s help the Christmas way of living last all year long.
