The Other Person

There is one thing that you will never see in a pro-abortion ad – a mention of the other person – the one who has the most to lose. There is an intense interest in the rights of the mother, the health of the mother and the general well-being of the mother. While all of these things are important, consideration of the other person involved is ignored. I believe that even the staunchest pro-abortion person knows at some level that the other person exists and is nothing less than another human being.

If we admit that the other person is there, she or he is endowed with God-given, unalienable rights, the first of which is life. As a rule, when we are in a situation where two persons have conflicting rights, we decide in favor of the person with the more fundamental or important right. Can anyone seriously argue that the woman’s right to privacy or any other right she has is more important than the child’s right to life itself? Do we, as a society, really want to accept killing some persons to protect the rights of others, especially when those killed are our most defenseless?

It is up to us to speak for and defend that other person involved in each abortion. It is up to us to give expectant mothers support and alternatives to abortion. In a society which seems determined to diminish the dignity and worth of each person, we are called to speak the truth and defend each person’s right to life.
